About this event

Our next novel is by Natsume Sōseki, one of Japan's great modern authors. Specifically, we will read Jay Rubin's translation, but it is not obligatory to do so.

A summary is provided below:

"In Natsume Soseki's classic coming-of-age novel "Sanshiro", a young man from the countryside arrives in Tokyo to begin his university studies, filled with excitement, uncertainty and naivete about big city life. Through Sanshiro's journey of self-discovery, Soseki masterfully captures the disorientation and wonder of a sensitive youth grappling with newfound independence, social expectations, and the complexities of relationships.

Set in early 20th century Japan, the novel paints a vivid portrait of a nation in transition, caught between tradition and modernity. As Sanshiro navigates the intellectual fervor of campus life, the intrigues of romance, and the weight of familial obligations, readers are drawn into his inner world - his hopes, fears, triumphs and fumbles."

Please join us for food and conversation as we discuss this novel.

I will make a reservation on the Sunday before the meetup. If you must cancel, please try to do so before this date. Reservations will also close on this day.
