Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 11th of April.
Good morning, Carmel.
💼 Business
Gemi Ozdemir received a tornado alert on April 2 and later learned his Carmel fitness center Ozwell was hit by a storm that damaged a parking lot light and moved building beams—forcing a complete rebuild of its retractable enclosure.
Ozwell reopened April 8 and will hold group classes at reduced capacity until repairs are finished.
📰 Economy
The Carmel Christkindlmarkt set records for visitors, sales, and earnings in 2024 but spent $448K more than it earned after increasing staff from three to nine full-time employees.
Carmel City Council will meet at 6 p.m. April 16 at City Hall to review the city’s support while CEO Maria Adele Rosenfeld begins a new role on an international board (which connects market leaders).
🎓 Education
In early April, the U.S. Department of Education told state agencies to sign a form saying schools will not run DEI programs — those that do not sign will lose 10% of their federal funds.
Indiana’s Department of Education is now working with districts such as Plainfield and Lawrence Township — and some critics worry the rule may limit how teachers share history.
🏥 Health
Medicare brokers offer free, independent help to compare plans and find the best option for keeping preferred doctors and managing expensive prescriptions—helping avoid costly mistakes in the confusing world of insurance choices.
Sylvia Gordon, a third-generation agent in central Indiana with a large following, advises that using an independent broker saves time and ensures unbiased recommendations from multiple insurance companies.
🏈 Sports
The Indianapolis Colts released kicker Matt Gay in a social media announcement.
The team now has one kicker—Spencer Shrader, a 2024 undrafted free agent who spent time with the Colts, Jets and Chiefs.
Walk-on offensive lineman Ethan Trent (a Carmel High graduate) earned a football scholarship when head coach Barry Odom singled him out on Thursday at Purdue practice.
Trent played in three games last season and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors (his late brother Tyler inspired his journey) and has been taking first-team reps this spring.
Today the Hamilton County Reporter unveiled its All-County Boys Basketball team, naming Fishers senior Justin Kirby Player of the Year for his role in the Tigers’ 30-1 season.
The team also honors Guerin Catholic senior Bryson Cardinal and Noblesville junior All-Stars Justin Curry and Baron Walker, as well as Fishers sophomore Jason Gardner Jr.
The Indiana Pacers secured home court advantage for the playoffs with a win over Cleveland; the final score was 114 to 112—Tyrese Haliburton led with 23 points.
They will open their series at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and could improve their seeding by catching New York in upcoming games.
