COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Morse Reservoir is busy with boaters and local businesses preparing for Labor Day weekend—summer’s last surge before the season ends. Manager Yussef Abdelhak of The Boathouse Kitchen said his restaurant earns 80—85% of its business in the summer and boater Tom Trung hopes for more sunny days before activity winds down.  WRTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carmel Clay Schools Superintendent Thomas Oestreich said that Senate Bill 1 will remove the usual 4% revenue boost and cause a loss of nearly $3 million a year — he warned the district may need to raise taxes or cut programs to cover rising costs.  Current
  • Carmel Clay Schools said that after diploma requirements changed at the end of last school year from a mix of courses to 12 credits of personalized electives, many students will still take world language classes to earn four credits for the Honors Seal. The district offers nine language options and international trips to help students build a global perspective.  Current

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During a virtual meeting on August 28, Mayor Sue Finkam said SB 1 will cut Carmel's property tax revenue by $3.8 million in 2026 and by $38.1 million by 2030, which may prompt a local income tax in 2028 + require tighter budget controls to keep public safety and infrastructure funding steady.  Current
  • At their Aug. 25 meeting, the Hamilton County Commissioners approved a supplemental agreement for the 146th Street and Hazel Dell Parkway interchange for $504,585 — mainly for appraisal activities following public hearing feedback — and a contract with addendum for updating the county’s multihazard mitigation plan with a federal BRIC grant covering $23,304. The design team will finalize interchange options while The Polis Center will soon schedule a kick-off for the mitigation project, and the next commissioners meeting is set for 1:45 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Hamilton County Government and Judicial Center in Noblesville.  Current
  • Carmel Clay Public Library Director Bob Swanay explained in a virtual presentation on Aug. 28 how Senate Bill 1 signed by Gov. Braun will cut 45 percent of the library’s revenue and cost an estimated $330,000 in property tax income in 2026. He warned that starting in 2028, libraries may have to depend on county-set tax rates—creating an uncertain future for funding.  Current

SPORTS NEWS

  • Westfield will host the largest tandem cycling rally in the US on Labor Day weekend as 209 tandem teams prepare to ride up to 60 miles with stops for lunch and rest. Organizers will kick off the event at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Grand Park at Lot J—aiming to attract younger riders while celebrating Indiana’s motorsports legacy.  WRTV
  • Carmel High School junior Devyn Hansen said she loves rowing because it brings her close with her teammates and challenges her skills; she helped her team, including fellow Carmel resident Lauren Raines, win a bronze medal in the Women’s Youth Quadruple Sculls race at the USRowing RowFest National Championships in July—competing against top club teams at the event. The team trains at Eagle Creek Reservoir and looks forward to future regattas to build on their success.  Current
  • Tickets are on sale for the first leg of the 2025 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup at the Carmel High School Natatorium Complex from Oct. 10-12, with a reserved all-session pass costing $159.50. Carmel Clay Schools + Carmel Swim Club and Hamilton County Sports Authority have partnered to bring SwimCity, which will feature athletes from over 50 nations and local events to boost the local economy.  Current
  • On Friday night, the Carmel Greyhounds beat the Shamrocks 34-10 at a packed stadium during Operation Football and proved their strength among Hamilton County teams.  WTHR
