COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After a tragic incident on Sept. 28 in Grand Blanc, Mich where four people died and eight were hurt, comfort dog teams from Carmel traveled to Michigan to help survivors and first responders. Cornerstone Lutheran Church’s comfort dogs Magdalene and Eternity and volunteer Duke Koelsch supported those in need through a week-long mission.  Current
  • Marc Swatez, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis, said local community members feel mixed joy and sorrow after reports that Israeli hostages have been freed from captivity—while many are happy to see them return, they also grieve those lost in the conflict. The federation will mark this moment—Oct 16, 7 p.m. at Laikin Auditorium at the JCC Campus—with an event focused on remembrance and healing.  WTHR

  • Westfield officials celebrated Vikan’s new North American headquarters on Monday as part of the county’s rapid growth. Mayor Scott Willis said the project diversifies revenue and supports local job growth — developments along U.S. 31 add to the economic momentum.  WRTV

  • Janet McCabe, a respected environmental policy expert and former deputy administrator at the EPA, will lead a Sustainable Living Seminar at 6 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Carmel Clay Public Library—she will explain recent changes in environmental policy and local efforts to reduce climate impact.  Current

HEALTH NEWS

  • Melissa Ethridge, a mammography technician for 30 years, was diagnosed with DCIS—an early stage of breast cancer requiring only a lumpectomy. She is back at work with a new outlook and urges women over 40 to schedule a 3D screening at local Ascension St Vincent sites.  WTHR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Over the weekend, more than 400 swimmers from over 40 countries competed in a three-day World Cup at the new $55 million natatorium at Carmel High School — Olympic champions and local stars like the Shackell siblings broke records while the packed 1,000-seat venue cheered every swim.  WTHR
  • Coach Curt Cignetti kept his focus on preparation after Indiana achieved its first road win over a top-five team and a historic blowout of a top-10 opponent. The undefeated Hoosiers, now 6—0, will host Michigan State as they aim for a second straight playoff berth and to retain the Old Brass Spittoon.  WTHR
