If you live in the Carmel Clay Schools district, your school passed Tuesday. Carmel Clay voters approved an operating referendum, and voters in Hamilton Southeastern, Noblesville and Westfield Washington said yes too. Executive Director Terry Spradlin said 27 referendums were approved statewide.

Not every district got a yes. Shelbyville Central's referendum failed and Franklin's was narrowly defeated. Even IPS, where voters approved a referendum, is planning closures. Superintendent Aleesia Johnson said the district will ask its board this month to act on recommendations for school mergers going into next school year.

  • Funding starts: 2027 for IPS and Hamilton Southeastern
  • Next try for failed districts: 2028, even-year elections only
  • Decatur Township: referendum failed; district says it may need to cut over $8 million by 2028
  • Also passed: Zionsville, Anderson, Beech Grove, Clark-Pleasant

Indiana has 104 confirmed measles cases this year, a level not seen in the 21st century

If you have kids, it's a good week to find their vaccination records. The Indiana Department of Health reports 104 confirmed cases of measles this year, up from eight on Sept. 2. Health officials are urging residents to watch for symptoms and know their vaccination status.

104confirmed measles cases in Indiana this year

Indiana had 10 cases in all of 2025 and one in 2024.

Northeast Indiana has the biggest share. As of Monday, seven counties there combined for 56 cases, more than half the state's total. Mindy Waldron, the Allen County Health Department's administrator, has called measles "dangerous, highly contagious and extremely risky to those too young to be fully vaccinated and people with certain medical conditions."
